Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stock certificate of the Bank of Alexandria, issued on 5 July 1796 to George Washington during his tenure as first president of the United States of America. Founded in 1792, it was Virginia's very first state-licensed bank, with George Washington among the founding shareholders. Of the 25 shares owned by him, only the one presented here is known to exist. Originally signed by William Herbert (1748-1818), President of the Bank 1796-1819, Mayor of Alexandria 1782 and 1809-1812. The share certificate was transferred on back to Robert Bernlay on 19 August 1802, round about two years after the death of George Washington.
