| Description |
English: According to the King County Assessor, this building at 5449 Ballard Ave was constructed in 1920. The earliest occupant associated with the building is Halverson's Department Store, owned by Charles Halverson. Originally 1-story, in 1931 Halverson hired architect William Aitken to add the second floor, giving the building its present art-deco appearance. The Ballard Department Store, which had been incorporated in October 1925 by O. Bashford and B.E. Hogan, took over Halverson's store sometime in the early 1940s. A ghost sign advertising the store could once be seen on the building's north wall but was power-washed out of existence during recent renovations. The Ballard Dept. Store closed in early 1959 with the Ballard Furniture Co. taking its place. Giant 88, a local discount chain where everything was 88 cents or less opened in the building in April 1961 but by the 1970s had been replaced by Ballard Stationary, and later Mako's Office Machines. |
