Summary[edit]

Description Bagnall 18" 0-6-2T No.2587 of 1938 built for the War Department specifically for the Longmoor Military Railway as an instructional locomotive named "Kitchener". It was a real "de luxe" industrial loco with piston valves, Walschaerts valve gear, steam brake for the loco and for trains both vacuum brake and Westinghouse air brake, electric lighting, GWR-style jumper blastpipe top, Lambert wet sanding, LMS pattern continuous boiler blowdown and hopper ashpan. In 1948 it was sold to the Appleby Frodingham Steel Co. becoming it's No.1 at Scunthorpe Steel Works, where much of its special eqipment was removed. It was subsequently sold to the NCB which used it in South Wales at Garw, Maesteg and Duffryn Rhondda collieries before it was scrapped in May, 1967. I photographed it at Duffryn Rhondda Colliery out of use in April 1967 - just in time! It was the last 0-6-2T in service in South Wales - an area synonymous with this type of locomotive. Scanned photograph taken with a Kowa SET.
