TOTAL ENLISTMENTS Strength of the Regular Army, Reserve, and Territorial Forces on August 4, 1914, was 733,514 England subsequently recruited 4,006,158 Wales and Monmouthshire 272,924 Scotland 557,618 Ireland (excluding those enlisted out of Ireland) 134,202 Canada 628,964 Australia 416,809 New Zealand 220,099 South Africa 136,070 Newfoundland 11,922 Other Colonies, etc 12,000 Total White enlistments 7,130,280 C. A. S. C. Each Division was ac-companied by a Divi-sional Train (C. A. S.C), a company of whichfed the boys in each Bri-gade. The work of theCanadian Army ServiceCorps was arduous andat times they were work-ing under shell fire,which made their effortsall the more hazardous.Quoting from FieldMarshal Frenchs com-mendation, he says: Iwish to comment uponthe good work of the A.S. C, not only in thefield, but also in the linesof communication. Toforesee the requirementsof supplies as entailed onthe part of this unit, isconspicuously marvel-ous.

Lord StrathconaHorse This Cavalry Unit wentover with the 1st Divi-sion and did some veryeffective work. Basen-tin Ridge, in July, 1916,was perhaps, one of themost daring engagementsin which the CavalryBrigade took part. His-tory shows this Unit tobe one of great daringand they accomplishedmuch to a glorious andvictorious end. The figures for races other than white were approximately as follows: India— At the outbreak of war 239,561 Recruited up to September 30, 1918 1.161J89 South Africa 92,837 West Indies 10,000 Other Colonies 20,000 Total of races other than white 1,524,187 Grand total of all races 8,654,467 In addition to the above, Chinese and other labour units were raised forservice in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Salonika. These figures are apart from the unparalleled war strength of the RoyalNavy, which safeguarded the world-wide operations of the Allies, and,with the co-operation of the Allied navies, ensured the final victory.
