Protest badge - I stand with Standing Rock The significance of this badge is that it speaks to indigenous land and water rights and the Maori protest movement. Standing Rock is an American Indian reservation located on the border of North Dakota and South Dakota. In 2016 Standing Rock garnered significant international attention due to protests over the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline. The proposed oil pipeline would go under the Missouri River potentially threatening the Reservations water sources and burial grounds. This issue was highly publicised on social media bringing it to the attention of many Maori people. Many Maori people supported these protest actions as they could see parallels with environmental issues affecting Maori in New Zealand. Some Maori joined the campaign in the Unites States and demonstrations were held in New Zealand. This badge is representative of the power of social media to quickly raise awareness of and gather support for an issue. This particular badge was found at a bus stop near Parliament Buildings in Wellington after a protest. |
