Description: Bunter sandstone low mountain range with wide beeches and oaken old-growth forest.

Rocks, streams and meadow valleys with varied standing water bodies.
On the eastern edge calcareous dry grassland areas.
With its very high forest share (76%), the nature park is the largest contiguous forest area in Germany.
It is characterized by a diverse and impressive red sandstone landscape, rocks and acidophilous beech and pine forests as they show up anywhere else in Germany.
