The Tuscan sculptor Giovanni Pisano introduced a number of Gothic elements to Italian art. The use here of ivory was probably intended to recall French carvings, as ivory was rarely seen in Italian sculpture at this time. The appeal to the viewer's emotions and the sorrowful portrayal of Christ's dead body also reflect northern conventions.
