Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sculpture of Cosimo III De'Medici (1642-1723).

Cosimo III De'Medici by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725). Italian, Florence; 1717-1718. Marble.

Foggini was the leading Florentine sculptor of the late Baroque period and began to receive commissions for sculpture from the Medici court as early as 1676. Foggini carved several portraits of the Medici dynasty; his bust of Cardinal Gian Carlo de'Medici is displayed nearby. This bust, formerly at Gordon Castle, was commissioned by Alexander, 2nd Duke of Gordon (died 1728), probably during his visit to Florence in 1717, in gratitude for favours received from Grand Duke Cosimo III. Eight years later Foggini was appointed grand ducal sculptor and, in 1694, court architect.
