Pluto and Proserpine
Signed and dated 1849

In classical mythology Proserpine was the daughter of Ceres , the goddess of agriculture. Pluto, god of the underworld, fell in love with her when Cupid released one of his arrows. He seized Proserpine as she was collecting flowers with her female companions and carried her off to the underworld to become his wife.
