Summary[edit]

Description
Britain Loves Wikipedia at the Victoria and Albert Museum
Owl cup, Malines, around 1520
English: Owl cup, silver with garnets. Malines, around 1520. Maker's mark illegible. Owls were usually awarded as shooting prizes and often have inscriptions relating to Aristotle's comments on the owl. In addition, owls with bells tied to their feet were used as decoys in 16th-century shooting competitions. The foot is of northern Renaissance form and Dutch silver of this time is very rare.
