English: Nandi, Siva's Sacred Bull

Southern Deccan
Late 16th - early 17th century

In a Hindu temple dedicated to the worship of Siva, the presence of the bull-calf Nandi is essential. Nandi is Siva's vahana or sacred vehicle and is traditionally positioned in the temple courtyard facing directly in the central sanctuary which houses the principal Siva image, the linga. The Sanskrit word nandi means 'joy' and refers to the emotions experienced by a devotee in the presence of Lord Siva.
