Summary[edit]

Description
English: Leda and the swan

About 1550-75
Follower of Michelangelo
Italy, Florence
Marble

In classical legend the god Zeus disguised himself as a swan in order to make love to Leda. This became a popular artistic theme in the Renaissance, with the couple often shown in explicitly erotic poses. Leda's pose in this version reflects the languid style associated with Mannerism.

This group was bought in Florence in 1865 by the British painter Sir John Everett Millais. It was originally said to be by Michelangelo, however since its arrival in Britain, and its acquisition by the V&A in 1937, the attribution has been discussed at length without definite conclusion. The left leg of Leda and the wings of the swan have been left unfinished.

Purchased by the John Webb Trust.
