The Gospels, written by the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, chronicle the life of Christ. Medieval monasteries produced beautifully illuminated manuscript copies of the Gospels, with elaborate metal bindings set with precious stones. This relatively simple cover is decorated with the face of Christ and the symbols of the Evangelists.
