Decorated Parade Armour (Burgonet and Breastplate)
English: Decorated Parade Armour (circa 1585).

Milan, Italy.
Lucio Marliani (also known as Piccinino), active about 1570-89.

This parade armour comes from a series presented to the Spanish royal family in the 1580s. Tailor-made parade armour was iron clothing: the pointed \'peascod\' breastplate imitated fashionable doublets. Draped with fine silk sashes, and with helmets sprouting plumes of ostrich feathers, such armour was for effect, not protection. Inspired by ancient Roman armour, it transformed Renaissance nobles into classical heroes.

Probably presented in 1585 by Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy to the future King Philip III of Spain.

Bequeathed by D.M. Currie
