This depicts a historic battle fought between a joint British and Austrian army and the French (who eventually won). It is a small-scale example of the huge battle scenes for which Philippoteaux was famous. The subject matter reflects the nostalgia among certain sectors of the French society for the 18th century, before the upheavals of the revolution.
