Babe Ruth and John McGraw photograph, 1923 October 03 Accession Number BL-4067-99 Abstract A black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth (left) and John McGraw (right), taken at the Polo Grounds on October 3, 1923. Ruth is wearing a New York Giants home uniform while McGraw is dressed in street clothes. Ruth and McGraw stand on the steps of home dugout at the Polo Grounds. Ruth has his left foot resting on the top step with his left hand resting on left his knee and his right hand on his right hip. McGraw stands with his right foot resting on the top step with his right hand resting on his right knee and his left hand in a jacket pocket. Ruth is looking into the camera while McGraw is not. Above the dugout, fans sit in their seats. Date Created 1923-10-03 Copyright Date 1923 Biographical/Historical Note On October 3, 1923 the New York Giants played an exhibition game against the International League Baltimore Orioles as a charity fundraiser for the benefit of former Giants owner John B. Day and former Giants manager Jim Mutrie. Babe Ruth had began his professional baseball career with the Orioles, so he agreed to play in the game. McGraw managed a team composed of the Giants' usual starters and Ruth to a nine to three victory. |
