Map of Southeast Asia

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Giacomo Gastaldi produced the map for Giovanni Ramusio's Delle navigatiorii et viaggi (1554). It was originally in woodcut. However, after a fire at the workshop in 1557, subsequent maps were produced from copper plates. The map shows the Philippines as "Filipina", Mindanao as Vendanao. Sulawesi (Celebes) is shown for the first time. Borneo is undersized and Gastaldi has cropped Java uncertain of its southern coast. On the mainland, the Malay peninsula exhibits its characteristic eastward slant, yet its southern tip has become detached due to erroneous reports of a trans-peninsular waterway. Of note is the apperance of the mythical Lake Chiang Mai (Lago de Chia May). Although the lake made a brief appearance on Fries's map of Southeast Asia, it is only on Gastaldi's map that it appears full fledged and it is situated to the east of Bengal.
