| Description |
English: The map first appeared in the 1657 Latin edition of Johannes Janssonius's Atlas Maritimus. The lack of interior detail reflects the lack of knowledge of inland Java. The Dutch capital in the East Indies was located on the north western coast of the island of Batavia, represented on the map by a small fort. The chart is embellished with two cartouches featuring natives and Chinese merchants flanking the title, and mermaids surrounding the scale of miles. Janssonius's representation of Java remained unchanged as the definitive depiction of the island until well into the eighteen century |
