Map of Southeast Asia

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The map was first published in Athenasius Kircher's Mundus Subterraneus of 1664. Athenasius Kircher suggested that the tides were caused by water moving to and from a subterranean ocean. One such ocean can be seen in the middle of Asia named "Hydrophylacium principal Asiae". This entirely fictitious ocean feeds the Indus, Ganges and the "Ieselbas" (a phantom river entering into the Capsian sea). The cartography is loosely based on Dutch charts.
