Summary[edit]
DescriptionB-29A Wreckage - geograph.org.uk - 1397878.jpg |
English: B-29A Wreckage The vast inhospitable peat bog plateau of Bleaklow can be an absolute nightmare to navigate in bad weather. Sadly the same applies to aircraft, there are numerous crash sites littering the peat landscape. They are incredibly thought provoking places, not just the tragedy in such a remote place, but the wreckage looks as though it came down last week, not 60 years ago. Wreaths are tied to some of the twisted metal, small wooden Remembrance crosses have been planted in the peat, and loose bits of fuselage flap in the buffeting wind.
This plane is a Boeing Superfortress B-29A - the same type that dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and was on a routine flight delivering mail between US airforce bases. Had it been flying 50 feet higher it would haved cleared Bleaklow, instead it ploughed into the side of Shelf Moor in thick cloud.. |
