Summary[edit]

Description
English: It is located in Suan Phrik sub-district, approximately 4 kilometresfrom the downtown district. In the past, thiskraal was used as a place for the captureof elephants performed in front of a royal pavilion “Elephant snaring”arranged by the elephant Brahman. A highly trained mahout would capture an elephant before a king for selection, mainly in accordance with elephant’s sacred characteristics to supplement merit to the king.

After the Burmese occupation in 1767 this place was abandoned until being reconstructed by the intent of King Rama I, King Rama III and King Rama V. Originally, elephant round-ups were a type of entertainment and an annual festival, and occasionally held to entertain royal guests.

The Royal Elephant Kraal Villagefeatures an elephantstay and a residence for mahouts. Presently, more than 80 elephants provide a ridding service for visitors toancient sites in the city. The village is also a place for elephant training demonstration, a learningcentre for new generations of mahouts, and a research laboratory for pollution and waste management produced by elephants (elephant waste and leftovers).
