this destroys the equilibrium and brings the siphon intooperation. This sijihon has been fairly successful, an importantelement of its success being the fact that the auxiliary blow offtrap is cast with the main trap, thus avoiding leaks and reducingthe liability of rusting shut to a minimum. However, it is subjectto clogging by foreign matter and hence it is useless in somecases. It is as near perfection as may be expected for the formwhich depends upon an auxiliary device for its operation.

-7- THE WALKER SIPHON. The Walker siphon is a modification of the Rhoacis Williamwith some additional features. As is shown in Plate IV. Itconsists essentially of two castings. First there is a maindischarge trap having within it. a smaller or auxiliary blow offtrap. The second piece or bell fits over the top of the maintrap and is held in place by brackets, fastened to the bell andtrap. Runnlrag up each eide of the bell and directly oppositeeach other are two openings which meet in the center of the topof the bell. From this point a pipe runs down into the maintrap to a point a short distance below the bottom of the bell.The trap being filled with water, the supply pipe is turned onin the tank. As the water rises the bottom of the bell is sealedand then the two openings in the aide. When the seal is completethe pressure of the air in the bell forces the water down in thetrap, and finally brings the siphon into operation in just thesame manner as in the case of the Rhoads William.
