Description

On 23 September 1969 the opening ceremony was held for the Auckland Harbour Bridge extensions (locally known as the Nippon clip-ons).

Although the bridge was opened just over 10 years previously, on 30 May 1959, it soon became clear that the four lanes were not enough to carry the traffic. By 1965 about 10 million vehicles per year were crossing the bridge, 3 times the number originally forecast. The capacity of the bridge was doubled by adding two extra lanes clipped on to each side. The additions were built by a Japanese firm, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, which led to the nickname.

The image is taken from an Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority file, and shows the invitation to the celebratory dinner following the official opening ceremony. Invitees included representatives from the Ministry of Works, National Roads Board and contractors, as well as people from similar organisations including the Christchurch Lyttleton Road Tunnel Authority and the Yarra River Crossing Authority (Melbourne).
