Aubigné-Racan (Sarthe)

Site archéologique gallo-romain de Cherré (Ier au IIIe siècle).

Les thermes.

Vue générale du bâtiment thermal. Il était alimenté en eau par un aqueduc de 4 kilomètres de long.

Les Gallo-romains ont rapidement adopté pour leur hygiène l’une des constructions caractéristiques des Grecs et des Romains : les thermes.

Les thermes sont un lieu de propreté, et de soins du corps, mais également de convivialité. Le bâtiment thermal comportait différents lieux: pour le sport, les massages et onctions, la sudation, etc.

Généralement, on commence par la pratique du sport, puis on passe par le sudatorium (bain de vapeur), puis la caldarium (bain chaud), le tepidarium (bain tiède), et le frigidarium (bain froid).

Pour se nettoyer la peau, on transpire puis on se racle la peau avec une sorte de racloir, le strigile. On s'enduit avec de l'huile parfumée.

Les enfants fréquentaient les thermes en même temps que les femmes.
