e catheter. The patient succumbed to the severity of the injury. Fig. 3.—Fracture of the innominate bone (not a fracture of thepelvic ring). the discharge of blood from the urethra or the admixtureof blood in the urine. The introduction of a catheteris necessary both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes(permanent catheter). If catheterization is unsuccessful, there is imminent danger of the urine infiltrating the sur-rounding cellular tissues and leading to fatal consequencesthrough gangrene and sepsis. Hence immediate and freeincision from without, as in external urethrotomy, and, under certain circumstances, a high incision (suprapubic)and so-called retrograde catheterization may be justifiable. The latter operation should not be attempted without thefacilities of a hospital; but any physician may properly beexpected to incise the cellular tissue surrounding theurethra and at least establish the diagnosis of a severe in-jury, so that the proper treatment may be instituted.
