hat diflTerent picture. The foreign bodies arehere covered by a whitish exudate, the black color of themetal showing only in two places in a. In the latter thesplinter, which had been almost two months in the retina, produced a characteristic alteration in the immediate neigh-borhood. The pigment-epithelium has in part disappearedand the splinter is surrounded by a light colored areola inwhich a few choroidal vessels are seen. This areola alsoshows an irregular pigmentation, which becomes more intensenear the foreign body. In the adjacent region there are threesmall choroiditic foci, light in color, with ill-defined edges, and surrounded by irregular pigmentation. In b there are no changes in the^ immediate surroundingof the splinter, although at the time the picture was madethe splinter had been in the retina six weeks. Retinal Detachment in the Temporal Portion ofthe Eye-ground.—Although the injury is one of about twelveweeks standing, it may be called a recent injury, as thereis not as yet any marked degree of opacity or wrinklingof the retina. The picture of the retinal detachment showsone important phenomenon, namely, the absence of theroidal striations in^jiL&^-detai^hed -ftiearttTe striations beingobscured by tlie slight opacity of the retina, as also by thesubretinal fluid. In the marginal zone of the macula, wherethe retina is thickest, the opacity is most marked, so that thecentral depression, which is the thinnest portion, appears morefright red by mn;;-nj;t.- on the other hand, the red color ^//^ 01 tne choroid shines through more distinctly than in otherkinds of macular opacities, because the retina is thin in the 1 ^ region of the fovea on acc
