Old Injury of the Retina by an Iron Splinter.— In the two cases shown in the foregoing figure, the foreignbodies had been only a short time in the retina and eitherlay apparent on the surface or were embedded within themembrane; the present figure shows two cases in which thesplinters had penetrated the eye some time before and nowpresent a somewhat diflTerent picture. The foreign bodies arehere covered by a whitish exudate, the black color of themetal showing only in two places in a. In the latter thesplinter, which had been almost two months in the retina,produced a characteristic alteration in the immediate neigh-borhood. The pigment-epithelium has in part disappearedand the splinter is surrounded by a light colored areola inwhich a few choroidal vessels are seen. This areola alsoshows an irregular pigmentation, which becomes more intensenear the foreign body.
