The guerilla looked at him, and made no at-tempt to escape, even when he saw the two offi-cers with drawn sabres in front of him. He wasa bold and daring fellow, and evidently knew nosuch thing as fear. He had a musket slung overhis shoulders; but it was a useless weapon to himas long as he held his prize. On the other hand,Deck and Artie could do nothing without thedanger of injuring Grace. What be you g^ine to do about it, Yanks ? demanded the ruffian, after he had looked hisassailants over a moment with a coolness thatwould have been admirable in a better cause. This gals my prize, and Im gwine to kerry herover inter Tennessee in spite o any young cubslike you uns. Do you see them men riding upthe road yender? I blong to that crowd, anyou uns better make yoursels skeerce fore theygit here.

Milton evidently understood the situation at aglance, as he saw the two officers confronting theruffian.
