Description

Some planespotting for the very first weekend of 2013 - in anticipation of seeing the new United 787 services to/from Tokyo. (And I was far from alone - plenty of hardcore planespotters, all of male middle-aged persuasion except for yours truly.)

Asiana 201 takes off for its return journey to Seoul Incheon. It will be practically tailgating another Seoul-bound Star Alliance flight, Thai 693, for most of the way, though Thai 693 will approach Seoul from Sea of Japan while Asiana 201 will do so over Siberia, Manchuria, and Yellow Sea.

The Lufthansa aircraft in the background is the new Boeing 747-8, which replaced the 747-400 that Lufthansa used to deploy on the Frankfurt - Los Angeles route.. Many other airlines are phasing out their 747-400s as well, replacing them with 777-300ERs or A380s. Asiana's night departure (Asiana 203) has been replaced with a 777-200ER for years, and Asiana 201 is most likely to be flown with the A380 from 2014.

For now, Asiana has only two passenger 747s in service, and they are used on a two-day rotation that takes them to Hong Kong, Tokyo Narita, then Los Angeles; Asiana also operates two Combi 747s which are similarly used for Frankfurt services mixed with Asian high-density runs, and the rest of Asiana's 747 fleet has been relegated to cargo duty.
