Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ascent of Coniston Old Man (15) Alfred Wainwright (AW) describes the various ascents of The Old Man of Coniston, at 2633 feet, in his unique and thorough style; detailed both in text and drawings. Via Church Beck, AW quotes a distance of 2.5 miles, and 2450 feet of ascent. Very much the “Tourist Route”, and attempted by walkers of all abilities, the summit gives superb views on a clear day. With this series of photographs, I have attempted to show the route as it would be seen by the walker; looking initially towards the summit, but as the summit disappears from sight and the walker is faced with a steeper face of rock and meandering paths, some views back down the climb in the direction of Coniston.

I used the Coniston Tourist Information office as a start point, and have added the {camera} times for each photograph, as this information may be of interest to potential walkers who are not familiar with the route.

The cairn on the summit of the Old Man of Coniston. {12.54}. Photograph taken just before I commenced my descent, via the same route. On such a lovely day, with good visibility, the cairn was a popular spot for photographs. Meanwhile, other walkers had lunch, or applied sun cream and sat back to enjoy the rays.

The statistics; I arrived at 12.40, giving an ascent, including photographic stops, of 83 minutes. My PB, set in August 1996, was 63 minutes. However, I was in my early 40's then, and 7 pounds lighter! Also, having been hit by a car, whilst cycling, on 4th July 2008 (which still causes me discomfort), I was just glad to be able to stand on the summit again!

For those wondering what time to allow for the complete trip, the descent is really no quicker than the ascent. A key factor to bear in mind should the weather deteriorate, or darkness be a consideration.
