Title
English: Army nurse Abbie Ewart in uniform, Germany, 1919
Description
English:

After graduating from Queen Anne High School, Abbie Ewart trained as a nurse at Seattle General Hospital School of Nursing. Ewart cared for tuberculosis patients for two years at Firland Sanatorium, then, with another nurse, opened a single-day surgery clinic in Seattle. When the United States entered World War I in 1918, Ewart trained with other nurses at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, and served at American base hospitals in France. After the war ended, Ewart was transferred to evacuation hospitals in Germany, serving from January until May 1919, before returning to the United States in June. This photograph shows Ewart in a nurse uniform with a belted jacket, probably in Germany after the end of the war.

Written on verso: In one of the nurse's uniforms.
