Summary[edit]
DescriptionArms Simon de Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu (died 1316).svg |
Coat of arms of Simon de Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu (died 1316) of Yardlington (licence to crenellate 1313) and of Shipton Montagu (for which in 1277 he acknowledged military service due of one knight's fee), both in Somerset: Montagu modern (Argent, three fusils conjoined in fess gules) quartering Montagu ancient (Azure, a griffin segreant or). (Source: Cokayne, G. E.; H. A. Doubleday & Lord Howard de Walden, eds. (1936). The Complete Peerage, or a history of the House of Lords and all its members from the earliest times (Moels to Nuneham). Vol.9 (2nd ed.). London: The St. Catherine Press, p.79, note (b)). He was one of the barons who sealed the w:Barons' Letter of 1301 to the Pope, on which his seal appears as Three fusils in fess with legend S(IGILLUM) SIMONIS DOMINI D(E M)ONTE ACUTO ("seal of Simon Lord from the sharp mountain"), the counter-seal showing A griffin segreant. This is a very early example of quartering in English heraldry. His name in Norman-French was de Montaigu, named after his Normandy manor of origin, Latinised to de Monte Acuto, translating the French name Mont-Aigu ("sharp-mountain") literally. He was present at the Siege of Caerlaverock in 1301, where he bore Azure, a griffin segreant or (Montagu ancient) blazoned in the Caerlaverock Roll of Arms/Poem as: Mes a Symon de Montagu |
