Summary[edit]

Description

Français : Montreal's Coat-of-Arms-Concordia Salus

Presentation by the Château Ramezay Museum :

« Jacques Viger gave Montreal its coat-of-arms in 1833. The motto, Concordia Salus Prosperity Through Harmony expresses the desire for the harmonious coexistence between French, English, Scots and Irish, Montreal's main cultural groups 160 years ago. Montreal obtained its own autonomous municipal government in 1832. The following year, Jacques Viger, the first mayor, designed Montreal's coat-of-arms It carried the motto Corcordia Salus (Prosperity Through Harmony) and the emblems of the four main cultural groups at that time- French, English, Scots and Irish. Montreal flag today features a stylized version of this coat-of-arms. »
