Very chiefly, for those whoknow anything of my writings, there is neededexplanation of its not including the names ofTitian, Reynolds, Velasquez, Turner, and othersuch men, always reverently put before you atother times. But while you are here atOxford, I want to make you learn what youshould know of these earlier, many of themweaker, men, who yet, for the very reason oftheir greater simplicity of power, are betterguides for you, and of whom some will remainguides to all generations. They give youthe likeness of a man : they have nothing tosay either about his future life, or his gods. That is the look of him, they say : ^ here, onearth, we know no more. 49. But these, whose names I have engraved,have something to say—generally much,—eitherabout the future Hfe of man, or about hisgods. They are therefore, literally, seers orprophets.
