Eckel, 719 Monroe Ave., Ardsley, is shown above (right) receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross from Capt. Herbert E. Regan, commanding officers of the Jacksonville, Fla. Naval Air Station. Lt. Eckel won his DFC for shooting down two Japanese "Betty" bombers and sharing credit for a third during an aerial battle in the western Pacific last September.
