Summary[edit]
DescriptionArchway House - geograph.org.uk - 492114.jpg |
English: Archway House Archway House, was built 1844 by the 4th Duke of Portland as part of a bizarre scheme to be able to ride in his coach all the way to Nottingham along his own private bridleway with lodges like this every few miles. The design is based upon the old gatehouse at Worksop Abbey and decorated with statues of the hero Robin Hood, his friends and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The scheme was abandoned when the railways reached Worksop and so this became a solitary hunting lodge and then a school and finally two private residences in the grandest semi-detacted house in the kingdom!
It stands next to the Sustrans Route 6. |
