the capacity of dormitory andapartment units has risen from 195 to 1,209; on theLos Angeles campus the increase has been from110 to 418; at Santa Barbara no such units existedin 1941, and, at the present time, there are facilitiesfor 528; at Davis the rise has been from 160 to 613. In addition to the housing itself, the Universityhas established new cafeterias at Berkeley andSanta Barbara and has increased the capacity ofthose on the other campuses, besides establishingtransportation systems to serve students living ata distance from the campuses. MODERNIZATION SHOW Dean Leopold Arnaud, of the Columbia Univer-sity School of Architecture, will serve on the ad-visory committee for the first annual Store Modern-ization Show, scheduled for the Grand CentralPalace, New York, during the week of July 7. In planning the new car sales and service build-ing for the James W. McAlister Company of Bur-lingame, California, architects Irving S. Brownand Leo J. Sharps, gave considerable attention toplacing the large sales room in a position to givethe most display possible on a difficult lot. To do this, full advantage was taken of the direc-tion of the street in relation to the side lines of theproperty, and the placing of a court at one side ofthe building which gave exterior show windowson two sides of the main sales room, as well asexcellent display and complete visibilty of the ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER . . . McALISTER ALTO lubrication service department.
