Although the fabrication of structural steel framesby the arc welding method has been growing in pop-ularity, it has always been customary to anchor steelroof decks to the purlins by steel clips. The weldingof decks to purlins has not been generally adopted dueto the fact that most decks are so constructed thatwelding must be done from the underside, a slow, in-convenient and expensive process. On the Babcock and Wilcox job, the engineers didall of the welding from above and laid 1000 squaresof roof deck in sixteen working days, with two motorgenerator sets and twenty men.
