Part of them were landed at Milwaukee and the remain-der at Chicago, where they received little sympathy. The mob burned thetabernacle and part of the royal palace. Thus ended a fantastic attempt to establish a monarchy within the limitsof the great republic. In 1872 a movement was proposed by L. I). Hickey ofColdwater, Mich., and a man named Bennett of Cleveland to reorganize themembers of the community for the purpose of bringing claims for damages GRAND TRAVERSE REGION 57 against the state, and Charles J. Strang, the son of the king, then editor of theCharlevoix Journal, was asked to become the leader and representative of hisfathers subjects, but he promptly declined to consider the suggestion andpublished a letter in which he expressed a hope that the scheme would notbe agitated. ARCHIBALD BUTTARS Iiorn-er of 1856. Iri-sidfnt of tlie Okl Settlors Association 1918. Was born in Manchester, England, Nov. 21st, 1838. Came with hisparents to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1850, and to Huron County, Mich., then a denseforest, in 1852, his father being engaged in lumbering there. Mr. Buttars camecame to Pine River, now Charlevoix, in August 1856, to Elk Rapids inDecember 1856, and has resided in the Grand Traverse region ever since, at 58 OLD SETTLERS O F THE Elk Rapids, Traverse City, Northport, and in 1869 became the junior memberof the firm of Fox, Rose & Buttars, locating at Charlevoix, doing a generalmercantile business, and also at Petoskey where they opened the firststore in that city. In 1884 the firm dissolved and Mr. Buttars entered^ thebanking business at Charlevoix and is now president of the same bank, TheCharlevoix County Bank, oldest one in the county. He cast his first vote as a Republican for Abraham Lincoln in 1860, wasDeputy Collector of Customs at North
