Italiano: Nel 1866 J. Osterhoudt depositò il primo brevetto (US Patent 58.554) per un nuovo sistema di apertura delle scatole di carne con una semplice chiavetta. Questa, fornita incastrata sul coperchio, permetteva di aprire la scatoletta molto accuratamente e senza dover forare o tagliare, bensì avvolgendo - a partire da una linguetta - una sottile striscia di metallo intorno al bordo superiore della lattina. Il sistema semplice ed efficace condusse a molti brevetti migliorativi del design iniziale ed è ancora oggi utilizzato nelle conserve di pesce, sebbene superato dalla tecnica “a strappo” delle lattine in alluminio.
