DescriptionApproaching Storm (3072680765).jpg |
When a dust storm overtook the Mars rover Spirit this month, the robot had one thing on its side that helped it survive: advance warning. Thanks to a weather report from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter high above, mission managers were able to anticipate the approaching wall of dust, and put the rover into a mode that allowed it to safely weather the darkening skies.
