Forseveral years hewas employed bylarge publishing-houses in Phila-delphia, duringwhich he pro-duced the se-ries of drawingsfor the Libra-7. ,jt;\ ry of Humor- ous AmericanWorks, whichbecame very pop-c^-^p^ /^^^t^^/)^ / ularin the south- ern and westernstates. He re-moved in 1848to New York, where he occupied himself in illustrat-ing Irvings humorous writings. In 1856 he pub-lished a -erics of designs in outline from SylvesterJudds novel of Margaret, wmich met with suchfavor that he was commissioned by the Americanart union to illustrate in similar style Rip VanWinkle and Sleepy Hollow. His elaborate out-line drawings of these subjects led to his recog-nition, both at home and abroad, as a worthy suc-cessor of Retzsch and Flaxman. He declined anadvantageous offer to settle in London, and appliedhimself assiduously to his art. bank-notes. He also illustrated Dickenss worksand Simmss novels, and executed the Massacre atWyoming, and various Revolutionary pieces. Mr.Darley was elected a member of the Academy ofdesign in 1852, became a member of the Artistsfund society, and was one of the early members ofthe American society of painters in water-colors.In 1859 appeared his drawing of the wedding pro-cession in Longfellows Courtship of Miles Stan-dish. Since then he has executed many largeworks, among which were four ordered by PrinceNapoleon, viz.: Emigrants attacked by Indianson the Prairie, The Village Blacksmith, TheUnwilling Laborer, and The Repose. Duringthe civil war he delineated many dramatic andcharacteristic scenes, including one representingDahlgrens Charge at Fredericksburg, and an-other representing Shermans March to the Sea.Some of the most elaborate figures and scenes onthe government bonds and legal-tender notes ofthe national banks were designed by him.
