Summary[edit]
DescriptionApple Time on the Levee at St. Louis. (Barrels of Calhoun County apples being unloaded on the levee).jpg |
English: Barrels of Calhoun County apples being unloaded on the St. Louis levee.
The levee was central to St. Louis' economy from the city's founding and reached its peak in the mid-1800s when more than 600 steamboats were operating along its shores. The Civil War isolated St. Louis from southern markets and divided the city's business and political leaders. Activity on the levee diminished as steamboat traffic decreased and railroads began to dominate commercial shipping. Title: Apple Time on the Levee at St. Louis.
