The work of reaching and planting, with desirable varieties of trout,the barren waters of the higher mountains, progress in which has beenset forth in previous biennial reports, has been consistently carriedforward. It would require a study of a topographic map of the moun-tain region to obtain any adequate idea of the magnitude and impor-tance of these operations. As stated in previous reports, only those few^main channels which occupy the beds of deep canyons in the SierraNevada Mountains, where no impassable fall exists between the pointwhere the trout are found and the ocean, naturally contained any fishlife. The feeder waters of this vast watershed, coming into the mainchannels over high and impassable falls, were naturally devoid of fishlife of any kind. To reach and plant with desirable varieties of trout,these barren w^aters, has been the fixed policy of the Fish and Game .8—14148 34 REPORT OF THE FISH AND GAME COMMISSION.

Since thereare no wagon roads in existence, the transportation of trout involvespackhorse distribution. With surprising celerity the public has dis-covered the fishing thus established in previously little knownstreams, and many thousands of people from the adjacent valleys nowannually visit, in pursuit of pleasure, streams which, until placed thereby the commissions deputies, contained no fish life. Nor are thestreams alone important. In the higher mountains of the FresnoDivision there are over 1,000 lakes and lakelets, most of which areadapted to the existence of fish life. A great many of the more acces-sible of these lakes have already been reached and planted with rainbow,Loch Leven and Eastern brook trout. In the Avatersheds of the Kern andKings rivers a great many lakes, too, have been reached and plantedwith adult golden trout. Following the original plan, other lakes ofthe sum
