Text Appearing Before Image:
with ahard line, that gives them a paltriness of which evenPiero was incapable. No suggestion of modelling hasbeen attempted. The mantle over the left shoulderand the knees is entirely modern, as also is the brocadeof the gown. The carpet and dais have been smearedcarelessly over, and in the whole painting nothing butthe moss-green brocade of the right arm, and theCrucifix, remain of the original work. We can thereforecriticise only the forms of the figure, which have thesame defects as the rest—the same exaggerated lengthof leg, bad foreshortening and awkward pose. The cartoon for the head, in black chalk tinted withpink and pricked for transfer, is in the Uffizi collection,(Cornice 43, No. 14506) and it is evident that the faceof the panel has been repainted by the restorer withthe aid of this drawing. The cartoon has the usualdefects of Pieros work. The insignificant features aretimidly drawn on the flat unmodelled face. Itsredeeming quality is a certain sincerity of feeling XXXI
Text Appearing After Image:
Alinari FAITH. BY PIERO POLLAIUOLO. UFFIZI, FLORENCE Face p. 144 VIRTUES OF THE MERCATANZIA 145 which the restorer of the painting has failed toreproduce. It will be remembered that in the second deliberationof the Council as to the commission, mention is madeof a design for this figure of Faith executed byVerrocchio, which was rejected in favour of that ofPiero. This rejected design by Verrocchio may perhapsbe identified with the black chalk drawing, washed withsepia and heightened with white, in the Uffizi. (Cornice52, No. 208), (Plate XXXII.) It represents thefigure of Faith seated on a raised dais precisely as inPieros paintings. It is officially attributed to Botti-cellij in spite of its obviously Verrocchiesque character.*That it was designed to form one of this series ofVirtues there can be no question, for it is alike ingeneral composition and detail. The figure is inprecisely the same attitude as the Faith of Piero. Thelight strikes on the same side, the position of the knees
