ntre foreground rushes with furious gesture a gaunthag—(Discord ?)—who seems to be inciting the malesto the onslaught. On either side of her struggle a manand a woman, the one to the left has already slain hisvictim, and kneels over her corpse vehemently gesticu-lating, the one to the right has clutched the hair of hisprey in act to strike off her head, as she grasps theflying draperies of the hag. On either side is seatedtranquilly, half outside the frame, a classic lookingfigure like a river god, which from the statuesquetreatment points to the influence of Roman sculpture.A youth to the right stands also indifferently watchingthe carnage. Within a loggia beyond him is seateda judge apparently ordering the ejection of a hideousfemale, who unwillingly descends the steps, castingvenomous looks behind her. Opposite is an ovalbuilding of classic architecture, with balcony and openportico, in which stand nude youths in superb attitudes,recalling antique statues. One in the background

P ^^ O o a: PAINTINGS AND STUDIES 127 seems to be refusing admittance to a young woman, atwhose feet are stretched two corpses, while on the otherside is a group fiercely struggling—males againstfemales—one of whom is in the act of striking off thehead of a fat and repulsive hag. A wall in the middledistance divides the scene from the background, whichrepresents, in Donatellesque low relief, a street ofclassic buildings vaguely recalling Rome, in whichother figures are seen swiftly walking, standing, andseated. The perspective of this street and the depth ofspace presented, are most admirable, for the last build-ing seems a quarter of a mile away, and the values ofdistance between each are well rendered. It is to benoticed that while nearly all the males are youngathletes, superbly built, the females are for the mostpart hideous and old, and of a construction which recallsthe nude women of Diirer and the German schools.
