No. ID of this group—Salome presenting the head ofthe Baptist to Herodias, (Plate XXI.)—is again verycharacteristic of his love of swift movement. Salomewhirls into the room with the impetus of the wind. Itis an original and strange conception of the scene—Herodias seated like some barbaric Idol in its niche,and the childish figure of her daughter, who shows thehead with a childs delight in a new toy. Thequattrocento conception of Salome was certainly notthat of our own day. With this ends the work of Antonio himself. Theremaining scenes—The Bearing of the body to theSepulchre and the Entombment—seem to have beenleft entirely to assistants, and have little merit either inthe treatment of the figures or of the landscapes, whichare purely conventional.
