men-at-arms, about thirty lihhre of pearls, forthe most part of the greatest price, of the value of fromfive to fourteen soldi the ounce; of which two garmentsalone, not reckoning the other expenses of cloth, brocades,and jewels, cost about five thousand florins, that is, about52 libbre of the purest gold.* Although none of these pieces of pageant-armourhave survived, one work, executed possibly to be carriedin some tournament, is in existence—the shield formerlyin the collection of Mr. Capel Cure, Badger Hall,Shropshire, dispersed in 1905, now in that of SignorBrauer, Florence (Plate XXVIII.). It is certainly bythe hand of Antonio himself and a work of muchimportance. The shield is of wood painted black, andupon it is modelled in high relief a nude figure abouttwo feet high, gilded.
