theyhad decorated a vestment that was but little worn.Not only for beauty of composition and admirableperspective is this design of value, but as a genrepicture, illustrating Florentine domestic life of thefifteenth century. In a richly decorated room, whosewalls are hung with blue brocade embroidered withgold, S. Elizabeth lies in a low bed, which a maidbehind bends over holding a tray of refreshments.The panels of the coffered ceiling, the brocade of thewalls, and the draperies of the bed, are executed withextraordinary realism, and it is marvellous that theembroiderer has been able so successfully to reproducethe depth of interior space across the room and downthe corridor beyond, keeping the values of space betweenthe figures. At the foot of the bed is seated a charmingyouthful figure asleep. In the foreground is the childon its nurses knee, which other women prepare toclothe, one warming the little shirt at a portable stove,the other bending over it admiringly. No more charm- XIX
