CHURCH OF SAN FRANCESCO. AT CORREGGIO. delicate perspective. The base of the throne is decorated inchiaroscuro on a red ground with the episodes of the Fall, Adamand Eve appearing in three distinct groups among the tree-trunks of the earthly Paradise. From this base rises a massivecircular column, surmounted by a marble dado, adorned withnarrow fillets and a fine tracery. The greater part of the surfaceof the column is occupied by an oval medallion, surrounded by agarland, in the centre of which is a seated figure of Moses holdingthe tables of the law. Little is seen of the upper part of the throne savethe double shafts of the supporting lateral columns, the rest beinghidden by the figure of the Virgin and her flowing draperies. Herknees are slightly inclined to the left, her feet rest on a stool, and herface and the upper part of her figure are turned to the right. Witha gentle smile she extends one hand, motioning St. Francis of Assisito kneel and adore the Infant whom she holds on her lap with theother. The Saint stoops to obey her, slightly raising his robe,but keeping his eyes rapturously fixed on the Child, to whom heraises his face with a look of adoring tenderness, laying his left handon his breast, where an opening in the tunic reveals the wound in hisside.
